 attaching a button

Sewing a button is a basic skill that every beginner seamstress should learn. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to sew a button for beginners:

Materials you will need:

  • Needle
  • Thread (preferably a sturdy thread)
  • Button
  • Scissors
  • Pin

Steps:

  1. Choose your button and thread. Make sure that the thread you choose matches the color of your button and the garment you will be sewing it onto. Thread your needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread.

  2. Position your button. Decide where you want your button to go and use a pin to hold it in place. Make sure that the button is centered and level.

  3. Start sewing. Push the needle up through the underside of the fabric where the button will be. Pull the thread through until the knot is against the underside of the fabric.

  4. Sew the first hole. Push the needle down through one of the button's holes and through the fabric underneath. Pull the thread through.

  5. Sew the second hole. Push the needle up through the opposite hole in the button and through the fabric underneath. Pull the thread through.

  6. Sew the remaining holes. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the remaining holes in the button. You should have sewn through each hole twice.

  7. Secure the thread. After sewing all the holes, push the needle down through the fabric, but not through the button. Loop the thread around the stitches between the button and fabric several times. Then, push the needle back up through the fabric and cut the thread close to the fabric.

  8. Finish. Remove the pin and your button is now securely attached to your garment!

Remember to practice your stitching until you feel confident in your technique. Good luck with your sewing project!
